Description
Pinda Swedanam (also known as Navarakizhi when using medicated rice) is a powerful sweating and massage therapy in Ayurveda, performed using heated boluses (pouch-like bundles) filled with medicinal herbs, grains, or rice. These boluses are dipped in warm herbal oils or decoctions and rhythmically massaged over the body.
This unique treatment:
- Alleviates joint and muscle pain
- Reduces stiffness, inflammation, and swelling
- Improves blood circulation and tissue nourishment
- Strengthens muscles and enhances flexibility
- Rejuvenates the nervous system and relieves fatigue
- Depending on the condition, different types of Pinda Swedanam are used:
- Patra Pinda Sweda – herbal leaf bolus
- Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (Navarakizhi) – rice and milk bolus
- Churna Pinda Sweda – powdered herbal bolus
Pinda Swedanam is highly effective in treating arthritis, spondylosis, paralysis, sports injuries, and muscular disorders. It combines the benefits of massage and heat therapy in one restorative experience.
